Food QC and nutritional testing

Into the real world:  CE microchips for food analysis

The complexity of food matrices is one of the primary challenges in terms of improving the selectivity and sensitivity of food analysis. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) microchips have emerged as a promising solution to this challenge, with new strategies to simplify sample preparation. In a recent review in Electrophoresis, new advances and examples of real-world applications of CE microchips are examined, providing a good overview of the potential of this technology for food QC in the near future.

Improving methods for noroviruses detection in seafood

Despite significant improvements in safety procedures and quality control, foodborne diseases are still a major headache for the food industry. For example, more than half of all cases of acute gastroenteritis are caused by norovirus - a preventable problem, if certain challenges regarding the detection of this viral agent can be overcome. Towards this end, French researchers have recently announced an improved method for reliably identifying shellfish samples that are contaminated with norovirus.

Protecting the food supply: rapid, specific analysis of melamine by UPLC/MS/MS

Incidences of kidney stones and renal failure in infants have been reported in China since July 2008 and are believed to be associated with the ingestion of infant formula intentionally contaminated with melamine. Allegedly, nitrogen-rich melamine was added to diluted, raw milk to boost the apparent protein content. Over 300,000 people became ill after ingesting the milk, with more than 13,000 hospitalised and a number of deaths reported. Following this outbreak, the Government of China has taken measures to eliminate the practice of food and drink adulteration. Court trials have been held for a number of people linked to the scandal and, in January 2009, two people were sentenced to death1.
