Awards for sustainable packaging innovation

Included among sustainable achievements recognised in the 21st DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation were novel uses of renewable materials, effective recovery, energy efficiency and community benefit. A panel of independent jurors selected this year's winners from nearly 80 entries from the Americas, Europe and Asia. Among the ten winners and eight notable achievements honoured for innovative products and processes demonstrating breakthroughs in sustainable packaging were Sealed Air, Associated Packaging Technologies, and Unilever and Amcor flexibles.

A brighter future for sustainable foodservice containers

With its ability to tell a story while standing on a supermarket shelf, retail packaging easily flags a change in recyclable content or biodegradability. Not so with foodservice containers, which often go unseen by the people who consume the food these containers protect. That has retarded sustainable packaging initiatives, but with a push from some major players, foodservice suppliers are beginning to reassess their materials choices.

PET bottles greener than glass or aluminium

PET bottles are a greener alternative to glass or aluminium cans, according to a new study into the environmental impact of single use packaging. The report by consultants Allied Development Corporation reached its conclusion after calculating the green credentials of each packing type by focussing on weight of materials, total energy consumption and total greenhouse gas release.
